PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal capable of preventing a user from erroneously determining a character and making character input operation easy. SOLUTION: The portable terminal with a plurality of keys 30 has a touch pad 10b and a contact detection interface 11 for detecting that the user touches a key 30, a press detection interface 12 for detecting that the user presses a key 30, a display part 20 for displaying characters allocated to the key 30 pressed by the user as candidate characters in turn and a control part 14 for determining the candidate character displayed on the display part 20 when, after it is detected that the key 30 is pressed by the user, non-contact time which is the period the user keeps not touching the key 30 reaches a predetermined judge time.
