摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately read an embossed character by means of a surface dark-field illumination method, regardless of the card background. SOLUTION: An embossed character reader 1 acquires surface photograph images of two cards, by switching an illumination angle of illumination light between two levels 12 degrees and 8 degrees, and using these images captured under different illumination conditions, carries out pattern matching to find first character candidate with the highest recognition reliability and a second character candidate as to each of embossed characters in the both images (steps ST41, 42). Between both the images, the recognition reliability of the first character candidate is mutually compared, and the first character candidate with higher recognition reliability is selected as being the recognized character (steps ST46, 47). When the recognition reliability of one of the first character candidate is equal to that of the other, the first character candidate paired with the second character candidate with lower recognition reliability is selected as the recognized character (steps ST45, 46, and 47).
