PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflective optical encoder capable of illuminating a photo-conductor by various patterns of light by a plurality of reflectors provided for a code member when a light source and the photodetector are arranged on the same side of the code member and the code member is moved by a movable part. SOLUTION: The optical encoder (10) includes the code member (20), the light source (12), and a detector array (13) in one embodiment. The code member (20) has the plurality of reflectors (22) thereon. The light source (12) illuminates an area of the code member (20) that includes at least one of the reflectors (22). The detector array (13) includes at least one detector set (14), and each set includes a plurality of detector elements (16). The code member (20) and the detector array (13) can be relatively moved along a displacement direction (24). When the code member (20) moves with respect to the detector array (13), the reflectors (22) on the code member (20) reflect light (56 and 80) emitted by the light source (12) to produce circular or elliptical light spots (58) moving across the detector array (13).
