PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper cutter, wherein the time and trouble and the cost for replacing a knife edge are held down by detecting the deterioration of the knife edge of the cutter for cutting paper, and automatically sharpening the knife edge when the deterioration of the knife edge is determined. SOLUTION: This paper cutter includes: a cutter for cutting paper; a driving means for moving the cutter; a read means for detecting the flexure of paper when the cutter cuts the paper; and a recognition means for recognizing the sharpness of the knife edge of the cutter according to an output signal of the read means. The paper cutter includes a display part, whereby a message is displayed by the read means according to the status of the knife edge of the cutter. The paper cutter includes a sharpening part for sharpening the blade of the cutter, whereby when the knife edge is determined to be dull more than a predetermined amount by the recognition means, the cutter is moved to the sharpening part to sharpen the blade.
