A method for winding strips (6) of crude rubber mixture onto a tire preform (7) involves (a) forming the strips using an extruder (1) with a die (2), (b) feeding the strips to a first calender roll pair (3), (c) reducing the cross-section of the strips in one or more stretching stages, (d) feeding the strips to a strip laying roll (4) and (e) applying the strips to the preform, tensioned on a tire construction drum (5).
