A drive-by-wire steering system for steering an automobile vehicle by a drive-by-wire system, wherein steering signals are input from a slide lever type or joystick type steering input device which is a man-machine interface steered by a driver into a steering control device through steering signal cables by a steering operation performed by the driver. In the steering control device, a steering device steering a steering wheel shaft is controlled for steering. Since the steering signal input device and the steering control device or the steering device steering the steering wheel shaft are connected to each other through the steering signal cables, apparatuses for steering functions can be simplified, and the mounting position of the steering device on the vehicle can be set rather freely. The steering signal input device can be mounted on the arm rest part of an operator's seat instead of on a steering wheel on which the steering signal input device was mounted in conventional automobile vehicles.
