<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reader/writer for a contactless IC tag which requires no change of a control program of higher devices regardless of the number of the reader/writer for the contactless IC tag, can expand the communication range arbitrarily, and keeps communication uninterrupted, and a read/write system of the contactless IC tag. <P>SOLUTION: The reader/writer for the contactless IC tag includes an antenna 13, a modulation circuit 16 and a demodulating circuit 17 for reading data from or writing data to the contactless IC tag, an external I/F (1) 18 for connection to a higher device or a higher reader/writer device, and an external I/F (2) 19 for connection to a lower reader/writer. A plurality of readers/writers can be connected in series, and control is executed sequentially from the highest reader/writer connected to the higher device to the reader/writer of the lower device connected in series. Each reader/writer device receives a command from the higher device, and gives the command with its own information added to the lower device.
