PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has a high medium S/N ratio, an excellent bit error rate and no problem in overwriting characteristics and is stable to thermal fluctuation. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium wherein a base film and a magnetic film are sequentially formed on a substrate 10, the base film has at least three base layers, the base layer 11 of the base layers formed in contact with the substrate 10 is an amorphous alloy layer containing Ti and Cu, the base layer 13 of the base layers formed in contact with the magnetic film is a Cr based alloy layer having a body centered cubic structure and the magnetic film is a Co based alloy having hexagonal dense structure.
