PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water absorbent having excellent water absorption properties. SOLUTION: The method for producing a water absorbent comprises (a) mixing a water-absorbing resin with water and a mixing auxiliary without adding a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator and an ethylenic unsaturated monomer and (b) radiating the obtained mixture with an ultraviolet light having a wavelength of >200 nm and≤400 nm while fluidizing the mixture.
