PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact high-performance variable power optical system constituted of a small number of sheet of components, and electronic equipment in which the variable power optical system is mounted. SOLUTION: The variable power optical system comprises a first lens group G1 having negative refractive power, a second lens group G2 having positive refractive power and a third lens group G3 having negative refractive power in order from an object side, and varies power by moving at least the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3, so that space between the respective groups is changed. The negative first lens group G1 is constituted of a negative lens, the positive second lens group G2 is constituted of a positive lens, and the negative third lens group G3 is constituted of a negative lens.
