PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic compound, capable of effectively decreasing a content of halogen elements contained in the organic compound, and to provide the aromatic compound produced by the method and useful as a material for giving a long-life organic EL element. SOLUTION: This method for producing the aromatic compound comprises reacting an aromatic compound which is produced through a halogen-containing intermediate and has a content of the halogen elements of 10-1,000 mass ppm with a dehalogenating agent, so as to decrease the content of the halogen elements into 10 mass ppm or less.
