PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an unsaturated vicinaldiol compound, having good selectivity. SOLUTION: The method for producing an unsaturated vicinaldiol compound represented by formula (2) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>6</SP>are each an alkyl group, an aryl group or a hydrogen atom) comprises reacting an unsaturated epoxy compound represented by formula (1) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>6</SP>are each the same as described above) with water in the presence of phosphoric acids.
