PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens which can be made very thin in a depth direction when being stored (collapsed) and is capable of very and stably improving the imaging performance throughout a variable magnification range. SOLUTION: The zoom lens comprises, in order from an object side; a first lens group G1 which has a negative refracting power and comprises two lens components of a negative lens component L11 and a positive lens component L12; and a second lens group G2 which has a positive refracting power and comprises one lens component having a plurality of lens elements L21 and L22 joined, and a relative space between the lens groups is changed for variable magnification or focusing. The negative lens component L11 of the lens group G1 has an image-side surface formed into an aspherical surface of which the diverging action is enhanced as going farther from an optical axis.
