PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical encoder capable of generating pseudo sine wave output signals without requiring the use of a separate reticle. SOLUTION: The optical encoder (10) includes a light source (12), a detector array (13), and a code member (20). The detector array (13) is positioned in spaced-apart relation to the light source and includes at least one detector set (14). Each of the at least one detector set includes a plurality of detector elements (16). The code member (20) is positioned between the light source and the detector array (1), can be moved to the detector array along a displacement direction (2), and defines a plurality of circular or elliptical openings (22) to be filtered in such a way as to produce light spots (58) in which light (56) emitted from the light source travels across the detector array when the code member moves to the detector array (3).
