PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear scale improved in the workability of replacement and an image forming device or the like equipped with the linear scale. SOLUTION: The linear scale 128 is equipped with holding parts 202, 202 which are recognizably different from the scale part 201, at the opposite ends being both sides of the scale part 201 wherein a scale for generating a signal corresponding to the movement of a carriage is printed and formed. With the opposite ends of the scale part made easily recognizable for holding, the replacement work of the linear scale 128 can be carried out while holding the holding part 202.
