The method involves assigning a transmission to a clutch, and arranging the transmission in a neutral position. A clutch pedal is unactuated for controlling the clutch, where the clutch is kept open. The clutch is adjusted in such a manner that the transfer of the torque of the clutch to the transmission is smaller than that requested by the clutch pedal. A gear is inserted during failure operation of the clutch pedal. An engine is switched by the inserted gear and the unactuated clutch pedal.
