PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microwave discharge lamp capable of performing an effective treatment by ultraviolet rays of short wavelength by preventing deterioration of emission strength of the ultraviolet rays of short wavelength by making the microwave discharge lamp a point light source, while preventing formation of discharge of tube wall stability type. SOLUTION: A discharge concentrator is arranged so that its longitudinal direction may be nearly in parallel to the oscillation direction of a microwave field generated in a resonator constituting container, and argon gas is filled in an arc tube so that the pressure in the arc tube may be 5-20 atmospheric pressure, and the electromagnetic energy E(W) input in an electromagnetic energy supply means satisfies the relation of 26.6P<E<60P, when expressing the pressure of argon gas in the arc tube as P (atmospheric pressure).
