PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method for detecting and correcting errors, based on an error detecting code and an apparatus suitable for it. SOLUTION: A method for generating a codeword includes preparing a set of dominant error events from an intersymbol interference characteristics of a recording medium; and generating a codeword from data using a non-primitive generator polynomial that can calculate a unique syndrome set which can completely specify each dominant error event. The set of dominant error events includes an error event, whose frequency of occurrence represents more than 1% or higher of the overall occurrences of all error events. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
