PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission capable of being miniaturized and that can improve the controllability. SOLUTION: In this automatic transmission, a planetary gear PR and a clutch C3 for outputting decelerating rotation by engagement of the clutch C3 mounted between a ring gear R1 and a ring gear R3 are mounted on an axial one side (left side in Fig.) of a planetary gear unit PU; a clutch C1 and a clutch C2 for connecting and disconnecting the rotation of an input shaft 20 for inputting to a sun gear S2 and a carrier CR2 are mounted at the axial other side (right side in Fig.) of the planetary gear unit PU; a counter gear 50 is mounted between the clutch C1 and clutch C2 and the planetary gear unit PU; and a friction plate 176 of the clutch C3 is mounted on the outer peripheral side of the planetary gear PR, so that the planetary gear PR and the planetary gear unit PU can be mounted close to each other, and a transmitting member 140<SB>3</SB>for transmitting decelerating rotation can be made short.
