PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an endoscope, wherein an insertion part or an insertion assistant tool of an endoscope can be inserted by a prescribed quantity decided in advance, and a method for operating the same. SOLUTION: The endoscope is provided with: the endoscope 10 having the insertion part 12 inserted into a body cavity; and the insertion assistant tool 70 which assists insertion of the insertion part 12 by putting the insertion part 12 through it. The endoscope 10 and the insertion assistant tool 70 are held by a guiding device 200. The guiding device 200 is provided with: an encoder 222 for measuring an insertion amount of the insertion assistant tool 70 into the cavity; and a locking device 240 for stopping the movement of the insertion assistant tool 70 when a measured value reaches a prescribed value.
