The light has an electronic ballast (12) attached to an emergency power lamp (10) and controlling the emergency power lamp. The ballast has a digital interface (16), and a microprocessor (20) provided for recognizing the lamp and failure in the lamp. The emergency power lamp has a horsepower rating of less than 18 watts. The ballast is controlled by a central control device. The interface is attached to a digital addressable lighting interface (DALI)-bus (18). An independent claim is also included for an application of electronic ballast.
