The device has a sensor arrangement measuring a parking space (15) while driving a motor vehicle (1) to the space. The arrangement has two distance measuring sensors (5, 6) that are serially arranged at the vehicle in a driving direction, where the sensors are ultrasonic sensors, radar sensors or light detecting and ranging sensors. An evaluation device is provided to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor (6) in the driving direction based on a measurement result of the sensor (5) in the driving direction. A sampling rate of the sensor (6) is adjusted based on the result of the sensor (5). An independent claim is also included for a method of assisting parking process of a motor vehicle in a parking space.
