<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure the safety of an image forming apparatus when the size of a cooling area and the size of a recording material passed through the area are different, in an image forming apparatus including: an image forming means for forming an image on a recording material; an image heating member for heating the image on the recording material in a nip area; a temperature detecting means for detecting the temperature of the image heating member; a control means for controlling the temperature of the image heating member according to the output of the temperature detecting means; and a cooling means for cooling the outside of the recording material conveyance area of the image heating member when the recording material with a prescribed width is set. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has the temperature detecting means for detecting the temperature of an area in the vicinity of the edge of the recording material conveyance area of the image heating member when the recording material has the prescribed width.
