PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reading apparatus capable of obtaining an excellent read image with high resolution by setting a proper original image plane position even when there is dispersion in an optical characteristic of a contact image sensor or in an installed position or the like of the contact image sensor. SOLUTION: The original reading apparatus includes: an original read means for reading an original; an original rear plate 12 with a resolution pattern for detecting the resolution of a CCD sensor 8; a resolution calculation section 34 that adjusts a distance between a contact glass 11 and the original rear plate 12, and uses the CCD sensor 8 to read the resolution pattern while adjusting a gap between the contact glass 11 and the original rear plate 12 to calculate the resolution of the CCD sensor 8, and the distance between the contact glass 11 and the original rear plate 12 is set on the basis of a result of the calculation of the resolution calculation section 34.
