PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera by which image data can be transmitted to a camera body more quickly, by reducing the size of the image data, when a lens unit is separated from the camera body. SOLUTION: When voltage of a sub-battery of the lens unit is detected by a mounting detector of the camera body, a serial I/F is started up and RAW data or YC data is transmitted. When no voltage of the sub-battery is detected, a wireless communication line is established between the lens unit and the camera body. The RAW data is compressed in the lens unit and JPEG data, MPEG data or the like is formed. The JPEG data or MPEG data is transmitted from the lens unit to the camera body via the wireless communication line. Through images are displayed on a liquid crystal panel, on the basis of the received data by the camera body, and the JPEG data or MPEG data is recorded, in response to the depressing of the shutter release button.
