PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a one-handed wheelchair having an operation mechanism being operable with one hand. SOLUTION: This one-handed wheelchair is provided with a rotatable hollow shaft 10 connecting the inside to the outside of a wheelchair frame 1. A groove is provided in the hollow shaft 10 to secure a transmission route of operation information applied to a left-turning hand rim 6. A solid shaft 9 connecting among a straightly-advancing hand rim 7, a right-turning hand rim 8 and a left wheel 2 is passed through inside the hollow shaft 10. A groove is provided in the solid shaft 9 to secure a transmission route of operation information applied to the straight-advancing hand rim 7 and the right-turning hand rim 8. The hollow shaft 10 and the solid shaft 9 are constituted to rotate independently from each other. This constitution allows the acquisition of signals indicating an operational intention such as the straight advance, the left turn and the right turn. Motors 38 and 39, electromagnetic clutches 36 and 37, and electromagnetic brakes 40 and 41 are controlled using information related to the operational intention and the rotating states of the left wheel 2 and the right wheel 3 to power-assist, prevent reverse rotation on an upslope, restrict the speed on a downhill, and reduce a drifted phenomenon, thus assisting the traveling of this one-handed wheelchair.
