Apparatus for producing hydrogen by dehydrogenating a hydrocarbon fuel, comprising a fuel reservoir (1) connected to a reactor (4) through an inlet pipe (2) and an outlet pipe (3) for returning residual fuel to the reservoir, comprises a heat exchanger (6) in contact with the inlet and outlet pipes to preheat the fuel and cool the residual fuel, a heater (5) to heat the fuel to reaction temperature, and a hydrogen outlet pipe (7) connected to the reactor and/or to the residual fuel outlet pipe. An independent claim is also included for producing hydrogen by dehydrogenating a hydrocarbon fuel in apparatus as above.
