PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small and inexpensive apparatus for producing porous agarose beads, and a method for producing the beads. SOLUTION: The method for producing the porous agarose bead involves dissolving/gelling agarose 2 in a suitable liquid, mixing the product with a hydrophobic liquid to form an emulsion 10, maintaining the emulsion at a temperature equal to or greater than the gelation point of the agarose, passing the resultant emulsion through a static mixer 12 to create droplets 14 of the agarose, and solidifying the droplets in the second bath 16 of a hydrophobic liquid. The obtained beads are washed and processed to crosslink the agarose, and the resultant beads are treated to add various functionalities on to the agarose. Another method for solidifying the agarose droplets involves continuous cooling. A similar process is used for the cored beads so that the agarose forms a coating on the cores. A similar process with either homogeneous agarose beads or cored agarose beads can be used to add multiple layers of agarose on to the existing beads.
