According to the prior art, multimode fibres are used as lightwave guides in particle size measurement apparatuses based on dynamic light scattering (FBRM, ORM). Due to its poor optical resolution, that method often requires differentiating the light signals scattered back by the measured products according to their edge steepness. The structure of the optical unit of a particle size measurement apparatus is simplified by the use of single mode lightwave guides. Owing to the generally smaller fibre diameter, this type of device has better optical resolution. Basic methods for analysing and interpreting the signals generated by the light scattered back by the measured products are described. In particular, it is shown that the intensity of the backscattered light can be lowered by various effects, so that it becomes necessary to regroup and combine signals which can be assumed to originate from backscattering from a single particle. For that purpose, a heuristic method is proposed. Moreover, it is explained how the required control variables and a quality indicator can be determined by statistical methods. |
