<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which has superior contrast and viewing angle characteristics, has no problem of tints during black display, and displays an excellent image free of gray scale inversion by greatly decreasing transmissivity in front, and vertical and horizontal polar angle directions during black display and controlling wavelength dispersibility of a discotheque liquid crystal compound used for an optical film. <P>SOLUTION: In the optical film, the optical anisotropic layer (1) containing a liquid crystalline compound satisfies inequalities (1) and (2). The inequality (1) is represented as Re(450)/Re(650)<1.25. In the inequality, Re(450) and Re(650) are in-surface retardation values at wavelengths of 450 and 650 nm. The inequality (2) is represented as 0.09<Re_m(550)/d. In the inequality, Re_m(550) is an in-surface retardation value (unit: nm) of a uniaxial alignment layer wherein directors of the liquid crystalline compound constituting the optical anisotropic layer (1) are aligned in parallel in a plane and (d) is the thickness (unit: nm) of the uniaxial alignment layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
