PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and image processing method capable of automatically extracting a still image in accordance with variance in photographing circumstance, a subject's movement, and the like, included in a series of moving image data and display outputting photographed contents as an image expression which enables intuitive recognition. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus is provided with a moving image data fetching part for extracting a plurality of frame images, together with audio information from the moving image data and storing them in a frame memory; a feature amount detection part for detecting the variance of the feature amount, contained in the plurality of frame image, constituting the moving image data; a display image selecting part for selecting a specified frame image from the plurality of frame images, on the basis of the variance features of an image or voice detected by the feature amount detecting part; an image processing part 33 for processing a frame image, selected by the display image selecting part in a format of specific expression; and a monitor, printer, and the like for displaying as a still image the specific frame image, selected by the display image selecting part.
