PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for forming single or multiple, phase-aligned coherent, steered and dynamically focused receive beams for an ultrasonic imaging system. SOLUTION: An ultrasound receive beamformer comprises an adjustable resolution digital processor for processing a signal used for constructing N-pieces of receive beams, where N is a variable positive integer, including a means for adjusting the resolution of the signal as a function of N to utilize all the digital processing capacity of the digital processor.
