PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dimming method and a dimming device capable of automatically controlling the light quantity, irrespective of an object with a high reflectivity. SOLUTION: Regarding the dimming device for controlling the illumination light quantity so that the brightness level of a video may reach a prescribed value, and wherein the light quantity is controlled by the slit whose opening part is formed so that the center of the slit may be positioned on the axis of a lamp in the maximum slit position, and the center of the slit may be positioned on the periphery of the lamp (limit position of light diffusion) in the minimum slit position, then, the quantity of the light passing through the slit changes while drawing a logarithmic curve in accordance with the shift of the slit.
