PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve the simplification of the constitution of an image forming apparatus and the reduction of cost by obtaining a means for peeling a foreign matter adhering to the edge part of a cleaner blade with simple constitution. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus, a driven roller 83 on which the cleaner blade 711 abuts is energized in an energizing direction D83, and a plurality of transfer members 85 are positioned relative to image forming stations Y, M, C and K, whereby a transfer belt 81 is pressed to abut on the image forming stations Y, M, C and K, while N transfer members from the one on an upstream side in the conveying direction D81 to the N-th one out of a plurality of transfer members are moved to be separated from the image forming stations as necessary. By such separating movement, the transfer belt 81 moves in a reverse direction to the conveying direction at a position where the cleaner blade 711 abuts on the transfer belt 81.
