PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device having both of favorable alignment characteristics and a high reliability. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device has a liquid crystal 50 held between a pair of substrates 10, 20, has alignment layers 1, 2 for controlling the alignment directions of the liquid crystal 50 on a surface on the side of at least one liquid crystal 50 of the pair of substrates 10, 20, the alignment layers 1, 2 are comprised of thin film containing two or more kinds of inorganic compound with different etching rate and have surface parts 1a, 2a processed by etching by radiation of a beam having directivity.
