Finely divided titanium dioxide in anatase form is prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of TiCl4, oxalic acid, and NH4Cl in proportions of 0.5-1.0 mol. oxalic acid and 0.75-3 mol. NH4Cl per mol. TiCl4, removing the precipitated ammonium titanium chloride oxalate composition, and calcining this composition. Mixing may be effected at 30-80 DEG C. by adding TiCl4 either to oxalic acid and then adding NH4Cl, or to a mixture of oxalic acid and NH4Cl. Calcining is carried out at 600-700 DEG C. and the product may be ground and screened through a 0.149 mm. screen. It has a density of 0.35-0.46 kg./litre, and may be used to form rutile single crystal boules by melting in an oxygen-hydrogen burner. |
