The steering and change-speed gear of a motor vehicle are hydraulically operated and the control valves of each are included in series in a single circuit. The vehicle engine 6 drives an hydraulic pump 9 and change-speed transmission through a clutch 7, the pump delivering through a line 11a, pressure relief valve 12 and line 11b to the steering valve 3, the discharge from which passes through the line 11c to a valve 1 through which the change-speed gear is operated, and through a line 11a to reservoir 14. The pressure relief valve, Fig. 2, comprises a flow-restricting orifice 15 and by-pass passages 16 and 17 returning to reservoir from either side of the flow restricter and controlled by a piston 19 acted upon by a spring 20 and having a passage 22 controlled by a spring-loaded hall valve 23. When neither servomotor is operating, the pump delivery pressure is controlled by the pressure of spring 20 acting on the piston 19. When one servo makes a demand upon the system, there is a build up of pressure in the line 11b and passage 17 increasing the pressure at which the relief valve works, subject to a maximum determined by the pressure of spring 24 upon the ball 23.</p> |
