Preparation of an organic compound (I) by fermenting a coryneform bacterium (CB) in which the aceE gene, encoding the E1p sububit of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, has been weakened, in a suitable medium so that (I) is formed at increased level and accumulates in the cells and/or fermentation medium. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) CB in which the aceE gene has been weakened; and (2) recombinant CB in which the aceE gene has been switched off.
