The present invention relates to nucleic acids coding for bacterial hemoglobin or a bacterial flavohemoglobin having oxidative and/or nitrosative stress protective activity, mammalian host cells containing the aforementioned nucleic acids, and pharmaceutical compositions based on these nucleic acids and host cells which may be used inter alia for the treatment of inflammatory and autoinflammatory diseases including diabetes type I disease.
