Provided are a direct formic acid fuel cell, and a method for operating the direct formic acid fuel cell to allow the concentration formic acid to be provided to an anode to be controlled in real time for maintaining the performance of a fuel cell to be constant. The direct formic acid fuel cell comprises a unit cell(10) comprising an anode(12), a polymer electrolyte membrane and a cathode(11), or a stack of the unit cell; a formic acid supply part(20) which supplies formic acid as a fuel to the anode of unit cell; an air or oxygen supply part(60) which supplies air or oxygen to the cathode of unit cell; an electrical conductivity measurement part(30) which is connected to the formic acid supply part and measures the conductivity of the hydrogen ion and formate ion generated by dissociating some part of formic acid to be provided to the anode, in real time; and a control part(40) which receives the measured conductivity value and compares the received value with a pre-set conductivity to control the concentration of the formic acid to be provided to the anode. |
