An apparatus and method for determining a sector location of a wireless communicationdevice and transmitting data from a base station to the wireless communicationdevice over a signaling channel in a wireless communication network withoutestablishing a dedicated data access channel. When the base station is readyto send data over a signaling channel to the wireless communication device, thebase station first sends a route table update message to the wireless communicationdevice. The wireless communication device sends a response back to the base stationwithout starting any routine to establish a traffic channel. The response isdelivered with a sector information to the base station. After receiving theresponse, the base station transmits the data over the signaling channel to thesector where the wireless communication device is located.
