<p>A handoff system in a communication system having a smart antenna and a method thereof are provided to efficiently set up a cell boundary area by adjusting hysteresis parameters according to system circumstances in performing handoff between a smart antenna BS(Base Station) and a normal BS. A BS transfers a neighbor list, composed of BSs to measure pilot signal strength for handoff, to an MS(Mobile Station)(601). The MS, receiving the neighbor list, judges whether handoff is required(602). At this moment, the MS judges whether the currently required handoff is from a normal BS to a smart antenna BS, from a smart BS to a normal BS, or between smart antennas. The MS determines an associated handoff type by using applicable hysteresis information, such as HNORM-SA, HSA-NORM, HSA, etc., and transmits a handoff request message to the BS(603). The BS, in response to the handoff request message, transmits a handoff command message to the MS(604).</p> |
