An electric power generating system for controlling power peak and a control method thereof are provided to effectively supply electric power to consumers, even when a power peak value exceeds a target value. An electric power generating system includes a power measuring unit(180), an emergency generator(350), at least one automatic switch(200-1,200-2), and a power control system(300). The power measuring unit measures power usage quantity of loads. The emergency generator generates electric power and supplies the power to the loads. The automatic switch connects a power line, which supplies power to the loads, to one of a power line of a power supply unit or a power line of the emergency generator. The power control system calculates power usage estimation values, compares the calculated value with a target value, and activates the emergency generator, when the calculated value exceeds the target value. Then, the power control system controls the automatic switch, so that the power from the emergency generator is supplied to the loads.
