A display device and a driving method thereof are provided to drive the display device at lower power by varying an output frequency according to the brightness of an input image. A display device includes an image analyzing unit(121), a frame frequency compensating unit(122), and a display panel(110). The image analyzing unit periodically receives input images having a first number of frames according to an input frequency and calculates the overall brightness of the input images. The frame frequency compensating unit adjusts an output frequency to be equal to or lower than the input frequency, according to the overall brightness of the image signals. The frame frequency compensating unit outputs output images having a second number of frames. The display panel includes plural pixels in the single frame, receives the output images according to the output frequency, and outputs the output image on a frame basis.
