An ink jet image forming apparatus is provided to precisely detect a nozzle in which ink is abnormally ejected. An ink jet image forming apparatus includes a print head, an ink droplet detection unit, a reflective part(133), and an ink droplet detection unit controller(134). The print head has a nozzle part(112) having a length corresponding to a width of a recording medium. The ink droplet detection unit has a light emitting part(132A) and a light receiving part(132B) to detect whether each nozzle of the nozzle part ejects ink. The reflective part is disposed at a position opposite to the nozzle part to reflect light emitted from the light emitting part to the light receiving part. The ink droplet detection unit controller controls an emission operation of the light emitting part, processes an output signal of the light receiving part, and detects whether any one nozzle of the nozzle part is malfunctioning.
