The present invention provides a magnesium oxide powder in which soil hardening is developed at a practically treatable velocity. In the magnesium oxide powder, the average periclase crystallite diameter lies in the range of 10 to 50 nm, the BET specific surface area lies in the range of 5 to 20m<SUP>2</SUP>/g, the average particle diameter lies in the range of 1 to 5 [mu]m, the ratio of the particles having a particle diameter of more than 10 [mu]m does not exceed 10 vol. percents, and then, the apparent density lies in the range of 0.3 to 0.8 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP>. The present invention also provides a soil hardening method of supplying said oxide powder with 1 to 30 percents quantity according to soil solids. |
