The apparatus (1) consists of a housing (2) with an opening (5) leading to an inner chamber (3), and an hinged support (8) with a holder (11) for a household cleaning article (4), especially a sponge, and a handle (10). The support also has a perforated compartment (13) to receive a sachet of a disinfecting agent and/or an essential oil with antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Once the support is closed the sponge is located completely inside the chamber, where it is treated with a disinfecting agent or bacterial flora growth inhibitor, which can include microwaves or ultraviolet rays, and a hot air flow.
