<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery containing a positive active material having stable crystal structure even when lithium ions are released to reach high potential and capable of synthesizing even in the atmosphere, and having high discharge capacity. <P>SOLUTION: The positive active material containing lithium (Li), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), and a transition metal capable of becoming hexavalent is used. As the transition metal capable of becoming hexavalent, one or both of wolfram (W) and molybdenum (Mo), for example, can be used. As the positive active material containing a plurality substances, LiNi<SB>0.5</SB>Mn<SB>0.5</SB>O<SB>2</SB>can be used.
