PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing binary porous silica using an alkali metal silicate as the silica source, without using an expensive water-soluble polymer for forming macropores, and capable of obtaining binary porous silica in good reproducibility. SOLUTION: This method for producing binary porous silica comprises preparing a sol liquid containing an alkali metal silicate, an alkyl sulfate, a polar organic solvent and an acid catalyst, and terminating gelation of the sol liquid in a transition state of phase separation due to progress of the gelation. The obtained binary porous silica can be suitably utilized for applications such as a column carrier for chromatography, a solid catalyst, a catalyst carrier, an adsorbent and a separating material, where the binary porous silica having optional pore diameter matching each requirement is to be produced.
