A helical compression spring (108) is clamped between an air (104) and oil (106) piston. A plunger rod (124) is screwed into the air piston and has a free end in the oil piston fitting into an oil chamber (127) connected to a further oil chamber (116) containing the active surface of the oil piston. The oil piston is fixed to a tie-rod (110) for operating a brake shoe or angled lever used as brake shoe. The tie rod is flat near the brake shoes (119,118).
